COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Knowledge grows through collaboration.

This section documents community-based projects, cultural empowerment, creative innovation, appropriate technology, and collaborative practices developed together with communities.

FEATURED PROJECT

Pengembangan Rekayasa Media Wayang Sodo untuk Penguatan Wisata Berkelanjutan di Bejiharjo

Bejiharjo · Karangmojo · Gunungkidul · Indonesia

A community-based development project connecting Wayang Sodo, local cultural knowledge, creative product development, community participation, and sustainable tourism.

THE PROJECT

Wayang Sodo is a distinctive cultural practice developed in Bejiharjo, Karangmojo, Gunungkidul.

Made from sodo, the rib of young coconut leaves, Wayang Sodo brings together material knowledge, storytelling, characters, music, performance, and local ecological imagination.

This project explores how the cultural practice can be developed through creative innovation while maintaining its connection with the community and its cultural context.

FROM CULTURAL KNOWLEDGE TO CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT

Local Knowledge → Cultural Practice → Creative Development → Product Innovation → Storytelling → Tourism Experience

Rather than treating culture simply as a souvenir, the project approaches cultural production as a process of knowledge transmission, creative experimentation, and community empowerment.

QR STORY

One outcome of this approach is the development of QR Story as a bridge between physical cultural experiences and digital knowledge.

Visitors can scan a QR code and access stories about Wayang Sodo, its characters, performance, making process, and cultural context.

QR Story → Wayang Sodo

COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION

Community engagement is central to the project.

Knowledge is not transferred in one direction. The process develops through dialogue between researchers, cultural practitioners, community members, and local stakeholders.

CULTURAL ECOLOGY

Coconut → Sodo → Wayang → Story → Music → Performance → Community → Tourism

This chain illustrates a cultural ecology in which natural materials, artistic creativity, local knowledge, and community life remain interconnected.

THE STORY CONTINUES

Community engagement is not a final product. It is an ongoing process in which knowledge is shared, tested, transformed, and returned to the community in new forms.

FROM PROJECT TO KNOWLEDGE

Community engagement creates knowledge through practice.

Each project becomes a space where local experience, artistic practice, research, technology, and community participation meet.

Through documentation and open sharing, these experiences can continue to generate learning beyond the original project and community.

THE STORY CONTINUES

CAHAYA LAUTAN treats community engagement as an ongoing process rather than a finished outcome.

Projects are documented, reflected upon, and shared as part of an open knowledge ecosystem connecting art, culture, research, education, and community practice.
